Success Story – Paul Ward

I have been studying with London Art College for two years now and feel that I have really developed. Most recently I entered the Buxton Open Spa Competition. The whole experience was great, well organised and it was great to have a real purpose to painting (you draw your location you are going to paint at random) I returned last week to collect my works and was delighted to find the picture bellow had sold in the exhibition!

The Yellow Monkey Emperor’s Classic of Chinese Medicine…..

My name is Spencer Hill and I am the tutor for the Digital Illustration Diploma Course and the Illustration Diploma Course.¬†Three years after my fellow author had the idea, and almost a year and a half after the contract was signed with publishers Singing Dragon, our book The Yellow Monkey Emperor’s Classic of Chinese Medicine was released on 18th August.

The book is a visual aid to students of Chinese medicine trying to memorise what practitioners of the art call ‘Zang Fu syndromes’. I took a sensible list of 78 syndromes (illnesses primarily linked to organs) consisting of hundreds of symptoms and turned them into a comic book over a period of twelve months.

I learned a huge amount during the course of this project, not just about Chinese medicine (which was fascinating) but further increasing my experience with dealing with publishers, writers and art editors. In addition I improved my skill with Manga Studio (the software I produced it in). I learned that even when faced with the seventeenth occurrence of ‘abdominal swelling after eating’ or ‘pale and frequent urination’ it is possible to find the humour.

My friend and fellow college tutor John Byrne once told me that the mark of a professional cartoonist is producing great work on your worst day, and this is very true. Long projects like this really test your motivation and creative reserves at times!

We won’t get an official report on sales from the publisher until the end of the year. Most publishers release royalties every six months, but I am delighted that it is the number one acupuncture book on The official launch will be held in London in a couple of months time.

If any students want to ask questions about the process behind the book or the publishing aspects, please email me at I will be happy to share.

Next project? Medical illustrations! It shows how varied our lives are as illustrators ūüôā

Drawing and Painting Course – Vinaya Deyannavar

Hello friends I am Vinaya from India, have Joined recently Drawing and Painting Course from the London Art College. I am very new to this professional art college, but my passion towards art is from my childhood. I used to participate in all drawing competitions held in school and won prizes too. The support from my parents, friends and teachers made me to enhance my interest or love towards art.

Basically I am from a engineering background, not from art profession. But as a hobby I do attempt in pencil work, pen work charcoal work, water painting and acrylic paintings. The London Art College is such a fabulous platform for artists, comprising talented tutors and students, I am happy for being a part of it.

I am very happy to say that now I am a student of Drawing and Painting Course of the London Art College, which is inspiring me to exhibit or explore my art works. Progressive self study units and supportive feedback from my tutor Paul Weaver, are really making me to build a strong foundation for my professional art. I hope I will do the best throughout.

Here are some of my attempts on charcoal works and acrylic paintings.

The following charcoal work of vegetables is from still life objects. First roughly I drew outline sketches of all vegetables placed in front of me using HB pencils. Then shading is carried out by charcoal pencils very lightly in first layer. In second layer, I highlighted the dark portions of the vegetables. To express the reflection of light over the vegetables wherever required, I slightly remove the dark portion from putty rubber. Finally ended with light shade of the vegetables opposite to the direction of light. Wherever required I used paper stump to blend the shade. Time taken for this work is around 1.5 hrs.

Three more portraits of charcoal works are, one is of an American singer Taylor Swift , the other one is of bollywood actress Deepika Padukone and last one Aishwarya Rai. Here all the works are photographs based. Using HB pencils I drew first all basic elements of face. Then using charcoal pencil I did the shading carefully. I enjoyed a lot while shading the curly hair of Taylor Swift. I used kneaded putty rubber to remove the dark portions especially to get hair texture accurately. Drawing eyes of human faces is one of my favourite work. I loved while drawing the beautiful eyes of Aishwarya Rai , which show sadness in her eyes. The time taken for first two works are 4hrs each and 1.5hr for third.

Coming to the acrylic painting of strawberry fruits is, from still life objects photography based. First I drew outer sketching of strawberry fruits and leaves very lightly using HB pencils. The basic colors here I have used are yellow, red, brown, green and white. I first colored fleshy receptacle of fruit with light red by leaving the achene, followed by dark red. Then using yellow color, I highlighted the achenes over the fruit. Lastly light is reflected with white color. Color mixing is done according to each phase of painting. Blending of colors plays very important role in realistic paintings. While doing highlights try to apply single stroke of color. The time taken for this work is 3.5 hrs.

The one more acrylic painting of water fall is of my native place GOKAK-FALLS, KARNTATAKA, INDIA. Since I have born and bought up there ,the beautiful nature all the time inspired me to go through this work. The colors I used here are yellow, green, black, white, brown and red. In this work major portion is of water flow and water fall. So I colored first scenery followed by water. To highlight the waves of water I used the flat dried brush with white color very carefully. I allowed it to dry for some time. Finally again I applied a single stroke with white color with dried brush wherever required. It took around 4 hrs to complete the work. Truly speaking while doing these paintings, I enjoyed a lot experimenting with colors.

I truly believe in exchanging thoughts, comments and individual’s experiences in the art as it is a completely progressive journey. Since I am new to LAC which is comprising of talented artists, I would like to appreciate your suggestions. So that it will be very helpful for me to improve my skills in this art profession. I believe the art is something to be enjoyed, loved, entertained, appreciated and treasured. I hope I am getting all these by joining LAC and¬†developing new skills too. Only my dream or aim is to become a fantastic artist by reproducing marvellous , fabulous works and enjoying with experiments with pencils, pens and paints. I hope I will get it progressively with continuous efforts.

Still Life Painting by Katherine Roe

Hello my name is Katherine Roe and this is my still life painting created in oils on canvas.  I am studying on the Drawing and Painting Online Art Course Diploma with Alan Dedman and started the course just over a year ago. I have always been interested in art and enjoyed studying it at school but have no formal qualifications in it. Last year I decided that I should take the plunge and study a subject I’d always wanted to do.

I choose the Drawing and Painting Diploma with the London Art College as I wanted a course that taught me the basics and allowed me to study at home to fit in with childcare. I have found the tutor support to be excellent.

Currently I am working on the oil painting module. Oil is a medium I have not used before. I was given a set of oil paints, just student grade, bought a few good quality brushes, a few cheap canvases and have also made my own hardboard panels, a piece of hard board from a well know DIY store and four coats of wood primer/undercoat. My husband, who is very good at woodwork cut it into six A4 size panels and one large 50 by 60cm panel. So all set, I had a go. I produced this still life painting which is influenced by Paul Cezanne’s work. It is called White Jug and Three Apples, oil on canvas

I’m really enjoy using oil paint and after I have completed the course hope to study this medium further.

We have featured Aaron’s¬†videos on our blog in previous months and know that they are extremely popular with our students. In addition if you would like to visit Aaron’s website you can find it at¬†We¬†are sure it will be a hit with all of our students, particularly those studying our¬†Illustration Courses. Landscape Scenery Painting by Alan Dedman

Landscape Online Art Diploma Course tutor Alan Dedman has been painting scenery for the recent play ‘The Witches of Eastwick’. The play¬†was put on by BAPA the¬†Bristol Academy of Performing Arts.

BAPA is housed in a converted cigarette factory only a mile from Bristol city centre. They offer high quality, accredited arts training and exciting performance opportunities for the whole community. Alan has been working with them on their recent play and has sent us these photos to share on our blog for his Landscape Diploma students to view.

Alan has written a full blog post about his time painting with the BAPA and you can read it, along with viewing lots more photos on Alan’s blog here – Scenery Painting >>

I wonder how many of Alan’s¬†students have ever painted a landscape painting quite this large. If you have why not¬†let us know and show us your work. Perhaps scenery painting is something our students who are studying a variety of courses might want to get involved in. It’s not only great for experience and practice but it also help¬†with¬†improving painting and drawing skills. Why not contact your local theatre group in your area to see if you can help out.¬†

Seascape Paintings by Frederick Thurgood

We are thrilled to display student Frederick Thurgood’s seascape paintings on our blog today. Frederick has been painting seascapes while working on the Landscape Diploma Course with us at the London Art College.

Frederick said….

I am a seventy year old disabled veteran trying to improve my skills in oil and water colour . I`ve been painting since leaving the Royal Navy thirty years ago and I love painting seascapes especially with ships in them.

The online course works really well for him as he can create his artwork from home in his own time.

Frederick has¬†a love and passion for¬†the sea and consequently it shows in his work. As you have probably gathered, the old adage is true.¬†Paint what you love and it will come through in your artwork. We can see the passion in Frederick’s seascape paintings and most of all we are sure that he loved every minute of painting them. Furthermore Frederick¬†has received excellent feedback from his tutor¬†Alan Dedman which is excellent.

Do you like painting landscapes and seascapes? If so the Landscape Diploma course will be perfect for you. Have a look at our website and our Landscape Online Art Course page to find out more.  Visit the London Art College website today.
