We are delighted to share the work of Andrea Thompson, who is studying our Beginners Drawing Course with tutor Monika Cilmi.
What strikes you immediately about Andrea’s work is the wonderful variety of subjects she is tackling and the confidence with which she approaches each one. From sweeping landscape scenes to quiet domestic interiors, from careful studies of the human figure to the satisfying simplicity of a single piece of fruit, Andrea is embracing every aspect of the course with real enthusiasm and growing skill.
Her landscape sketch, with its tall pine trees reflected in still water and a tiny cottage nestled among the trees in the distance, has a lovely atmospheric quality, the loose, energetic marks capturing the texture of the forest beautifully. Her interior scene, showing a figure relaxing on a sofa watching television, is a charming and quietly observed piece of everyday life, with confident linework and a good sense of spatial depth.
The figure studies show Andrea developing her understanding of the human form, and her hand drawings in particular are impressive, capturing the complex curves, shadows and structure of the hand with real sensitivity. Her seated figure study, worked in soft chalky tones, has a lovely sense of weight and stillness.
And then there is the banana, deceptively simple as a subject but actually a wonderful test of tone, form and shadow, and Andrea’s coloured pencil version is a genuinely lovely piece, glowing warmly on the page with confident colour layering and a beautifully observed cast shadow beneath.
This is a really promising and enjoyable set of work, and we look forward to seeing where the course takes Andrea next!
