Welcome to our latest Weekend Art Challenge, where we set our students the task of creating artwork inspired by the colours turquoise and sand. It’s a beautiful pairing, the cool, jewel-like blue-green of turquoise against warm, golden sand and it instantly conjures up sunlit shores, shallow seas and long summer days.
As always, our students took the theme in wonderfully different directions. We had serene watercolour churches and quick studies on khadi paper, a sunbathing mermaid brought to life as a digital illustration, a rather splendid turquoise hippo under a golden sky, naïve mixed-media pieces inspired by everything from gallery windows to Cousteau, and even an adventurous linograph print. It’s always a joy to see how one simple colour brief can spark so many different ideas, styles and techniques.
Grab a cup of tea, scroll down and enjoy this gorgeous gallery of turquoise and sand creations. A huge well done and thank you to everyone who took part! Another challenge will be posted tomorrow!

Watercolour in Winsor and Newton visual journal. I only used turquoise and yellow ochre. Mixed those 2 in various ratios made different tones of green.

So I went way out of the usual wheel-house and tried Linograph Print-Making with a silk screen. Each step was ultimately fun, and felt like I was using a different section of my brain to be attentive in the designing, cutting and layering. Recognizing the details are bleeding through the silk screen, I decided to roll with it…and thus this came about.
