We are delighted to share the work of Andrew Evans, who has recently completed our Drawing and Painting Diploma Course with tutor Heather Jolliffe.
Andrew’s work is immediately striking for its range and ambition. Across these six pieces you can see a student who has embraced every aspect of the course with real enthusiasm, exploring watercolour, acrylic and oil, moving between figurative and abstract, and clearly relishing the opportunity to experiment with colour, texture and composition.
The watercolour pieces show a lovely freshness and sensitivity, from a beautifully observed figure on a windswept beach, camera in hand, to a gentle open landscape with rolling fields and a distant hill. Both capture light and atmosphere with a confidence that comes from careful observation and practice.
His acrylic work is where Andrew really lets loose, and it is wonderful to see. The bold, graphic abstract with its vivid circles, rectangles and sweeping red diagonal line is full of energy and shows a real understanding of composition and colour relationships. The expressive still life, with its glowing greens and reds, has a looseness and vitality that is very appealing. And the dramatic, intensely coloured urban street scene at dusk, with its moody blue sky and warm glowing light reflected on wet roads below, is atmospheric and accomplished.
The richly textured abstract in fiery reds and oranges, with its sense of movement and drama, rounds off a body of work that shows just how much Andrew has grown and explored throughout the course.
