We are delighted to spotlight the beautiful watercolour work of Marina Niimeister, a student on our Watercolour Diploma with tutor Steven Hersey. Marina describes herself as a lifelong hobby painter who came to the course to discover the true magic of watercolour, and from what we can see, she has found it in abundance!
What makes Marina’s work so immediately striking is her confidence with atmosphere and mood. Her dramatic skies are a real highlight, from brooding stormy cloudscapes rendered in deep indigos and purples to softer, luminous studies where light breaks through in the most beautiful way. She clearly loves the expressive possibilities of the medium and pushes them with real ambition. Her snowy Estonian farm scene, which she returned to several times to explore and refine, shows a patient and thoughtful approach to her subjects, and the results are quietly stunning.
There is lovely variety here too. A wide, atmospheric wetland landscape captures the feeling of open space and shifting weather with great skill, while a still life of a cafetière and glass cup shows a more intimate, domestic side to her practice. Her raspberry paintings are a joy, showing real progression as she built up layers of colour and detail with growing confidence, and her night-time European townscape, glowing against a deep blue sky, is a particularly accomplished piece.
Tutor Steven Hersey has praised Marina’s exciting technique and her instinct for presenting a painting to its best visual effect, and looking at this body of work, it is easy to see why.
