We are delighted to share the wonderful watercolour work of Barbara Simon, a student on our Watercolour Diploma with tutor Steven Hersey, who has been painting her way through the course from her home city of Vienna. And what a view she has to inspire her!
Barbara came to the Watercolour Diploma having already completed our Drawing and Painting Diploma, and it is clear that she has taken everything she learned and run with it. Her work shows a painter who thinks carefully and creatively about every decision she makes, from her choice of subject to her palette, her techniques and the mood she wants to create. The results are quite lovely.
Her Vienna street scene, painted in a warm mix of orange and Paynes grey to evoke the feeling of an old photograph, is an immediately arresting piece with wonderful perspective and atmosphere. A glowing sunset over a lake demonstrates a confident use of wet in wet and dry brush techniques, while her backlit still life of antique scales by a window is quietly beautiful, full of subtle light and restrained elegance. Her negative shape painting of European onion-domed church towers is inventive and striking, and her A3 watercolour of crocosmia in a Japanese garden, painted from a photograph taken years ago in San Francisco, is perhaps the most impressive of all, a complex and detailed piece that she describes getting completely lost in, and it shows in the best possible way.
