Monday Art Musings – Trusting the Process Even When It Feels Unclear

There are times in art-making when the direction of a piece feels unclear. You may not know where it is heading or whether it will work at all.

This uncertainty is a normal part of the process.

Not every artwork reveals itself straight away. Some pieces need time, patience and a willingness to continue even when things feel unresolved. Learning to sit with that uncertainty is an important skill.

Trusting the process does not mean ignoring problems. It means allowing space for the work to develop before judging it too soon.

If a piece feels unclear, it can help to pause, step back and look again later. Often, clarity comes with distance rather than effort.

Making art involves a balance between control and trust. The more you experience this, the easier it becomes to recognise uncertainty as part of the journey rather than a sign of failure.
