Digital Illustration – Tsz Yan Lau

We are delighted to share some of the creative and technically impressive work produced by Tsz Yan Lau, who is currently studying on our Digital Illustration Diploma Course with tutor Monique Piscaer Bailey.

Tsz Yan has been exploring the tools and techniques of Inkscape with real curiosity and enthusiasm, and the results are wonderful. Working with the pencil and pen tools, fill functions and pattern creation, she produced a vibrant lizard illustration inspired by Gaudí’s famous mosaic lizard in Barcelona, building up colourful patterned surfaces with a lovely decorative quality.

She also tackled Inkscape’s trace bitmap function with great imagination, using it first to create a striking line-based self portrait alongside a portrait of her Nana, and then applying the same technique to a photograph she took during a visit to Hong Kong. The resulting street scene captures the energy and detail of the city beautifully, with layers of varying opacity and different line weights used to create a wonderfully atmospheric, almost dusty quality that perfectly suits the subject.

Finally, Tsz Yan turned her hand to character illustration, drawing her daughter in a Minnie Mouse headband in a charming cartoon style, experimenting with background layers as she went.

It is clear that Tsz Yan brings a real sense of playfulness and artistic thinking to everything she creates, and we look forward to seeing her work continue to develop!
