We are pleased to feature the artwork of Ritwika Ghose, who is currently studying on our Oils Certificate Course. Ritwika has produced some beautiful pieces for her assignments, showing both sensitivity and strength in her approach to oils.
For one of her studies, Ritwika chose a scene very close to her heart – a view from her own window. She explains that she has been recovering from an accident and often finds herself gazing at this particular tree outside. It has become a meaningful subject for her, and through her painting she has been able to capture the sense of calm and reflection it provides.
Working with a limited palette of raw umber, burnt umber, ivory black, and titanium white, Ritwika created tonal variations that give her work depth and atmosphere. She noted that while she is experienced in acrylics, working in oils presented new challenges, particularly in rendering the foliage of the tree. Despite this, her brushwork conveys both texture and structure, and she has asked for advice on exploring different brushes and strokes for painting tree leaves – a clear example of her eagerness to learn and refine her technique.
Ritwika describes the process as “a relaxing and enjoyable journey”, and her paintings reflect this thoughtful and meditative approach. Her ability to connect personal meaning with painterly technique makes her work not only visually engaging but also emotionally resonant.
The Oils Certificate Course is designed for students who want to explore the rich and versatile medium of oil painting, from tonal studies through to full-colour compositions. Under the guidance of experienced tutors, students develop skills in layering, glazing, composition, and colour mixing, while also finding their own voice as oil painters.
We look forward to seeing more of Ritwika’s journey with oils as she continues through the course.
