Weekend Art Challenge – Nordic Tales: Embracing Folk Art Tradition

Welcome to our latest weekend art challenge. Explore the enchanting world of Nordic Folk Art by creating a captivating artwork that pays homage to this rich cultural heritage. Nordic Folk Art is known for its intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and symbolism inspired by nature and mythology. Immerse yourself in the magical folklore and embrace the traditional motifs to create a visually stunning piece that tells a story of its own. But… What is Nordic or Scandinavian Folk Art you ask?

The Characteristics of Scandinavian Folk ArtMore peaceful, nature-related motifs overtook the folk art. Works of artisans were full of flower, bird and human motifs. These often referred to Scandinavian tales, legends and fables.

We would like to you design your own take on Nordic Folk Art. There are so many amazing examples online and we have added some below for inspiration for you. We hope that you find this an interesting challenge and the designs and illustrations below inspiring!

Challenge Guidelines:

  1. Research Nordic Folk Art: Begin by delving into the history, motifs, and symbolism associated with Nordic Folk Art. Familiarize yourself with traditional patterns, such as rosettes, birds, flowers, dragons, trolls, and other mythical creatures.
  2. Choose your medium: You can work with any art form, such as painting, drawing or digital art.
  3. Storytelling through imagery: Use your artwork to tell a captivating story inspired by Nordic folklore. It could be a tale of gods and goddesses, legendary creatures, or everyday life in a mythical Nordic village. Focus on creating a strong visual narrative that immerses the viewer in this magical world.
  4. Embrace traditional motifs: Incorporate traditional Nordic Folk Art motifs and patterns into your artwork. Experiment with symmetrical designs, repetitive elements, and bold colors. Feel free to add your own artistic twist while maintaining the essence of the style.
  5. Symbolism and nature: Explore the deep connection between Nordic Folk Art and nature. Integrate elements such as trees, animals, landscapes, or celestial bodies to represent the harmonious relationship between humans and the natural world.

So try to submit work that you have created specifically for the challenge – or course work you are currently creating for your art course. Sometimes our challenge themes cross over with what students are learning. Our challenges are great practive for your coursework too!
