If you have ever found yourself browsing our courses, reading through the descriptions and thinking “I’d love to do that, but…” then this post is for you. Because those three little dots hide a whole range of doubts and hesitations that we hear from prospective students all the time. So let’s talk about them honestly.
“I haven’t drawn or painted since school”
This is probably the most common thing we hear, and it is absolutely not a reason to hold back. Many of our most enthusiastic and successful students come to us after a gap of years, sometimes decades. Life gets in the way, creative pursuits get set aside, and then one day something reignites that spark. Our beginner courses are designed precisely for this moment, and you might be surprised how quickly it all comes back once you pick up a pencil again.
“I’m not talented enough”
Talent is far less important than people think. What really matters is the desire to learn and the willingness to practise. Every tutor on our courses would tell you the same thing, that the students who make the most progress are not necessarily the ones who arrive with the most natural ability. They are the ones who engage with the material, take the feedback on board and keep going.
“I’m too old to start something new”
We have students in their seventies and eighties producing beautiful, accomplished work. Art has no age limit whatsoever, and in many ways starting later in life brings real advantages. You have patience, life experience, and often a clearer sense of what you actually want to create. Some of our most joyful success stories come from students who took their first art course in retirement.
“I don’t have enough time”
Our courses are designed to fit around real life. There are no deadlines, no fixed class times and no pressure to submit work by a certain date. You work entirely at your own pace, whether that means completing a set of assignments in a few weeks or spreading them over several months. Many of our students are working full time, raising families or juggling other commitments, and they find that even a couple of hours here and there is enough to make real progress.
“I’m not sure which course to choose”
This is a very common starting point and nothing to worry about. Our course pages include detailed descriptions of what each one covers, the level it is aimed at, and examples of the kind of work students produce. If you are genuinely unsure, you are always welcome to get in touch and we will help point you in the right direction. Many students also start with one of our beginner courses before moving on to a diploma, which is a great way to find your feet and discover what you enjoy most.
“Will I actually get proper feedback?”
Yes, absolutely. Every London Art College student is assigned a real, professional tutor who looks at your work personally and provides written feedback on each assignment. This is not an automated system or a one-size-fits-all response. Your tutor will get to know your work, your strengths and your goals, and their feedback will be tailored specifically to you. Many of our students tell us that this personal relationship with their tutor is one of the things they value most about studying with us.
