We are absolutely delighted to share the work of Kathrin Wilfong, who is currently studying our Digital Illustration Diploma Course with tutor Monique Piscarebaily. Kathrin’s Assignment 4 submissions are genuinely breathtaking, and they give a real sense of just how much creative vision she brings to everything she does.
What makes Kathrin’s work so special is the way she weaves her own existing artistic world into every brief. Rather than starting from scratch, she has drawn on her personal ornamental wildlife illustration series, her own pattern designs, and even a photograph from her honeymoon in New Zealand, to create pieces that feel entirely original and deeply personal. The result is a set of illustrations that go far beyond coursework and feel like polished, professional art.
Her composite image, a digitally illustrated T-Rex hatching from an egg set against the striking rock formations of the Abel Tasman Nature Park, is full of wit and imagination. The way the illustration integrates so naturally with the photograph is a real achievement, with careful attention to posture, scale and light making the scene completely convincing.
Her red-necked tanager piece is equally impressive. Kathrin has combined a beautifully detailed bird illustration with one of her own azulejo-inspired tile pattern designs, experimenting with layering, vignettes and the smudge tool to make the feathers sing against the bold, geometric background. The two versions she has submitted, one with a full pattern background and one with a softened vignette, show a student who is genuinely thinking about design decisions and questioning her own choices, which is exactly the kind of reflective practice that leads to real growth.
And then there are the teacups. Vibrant, joyful and bursting with colour, this Oilily-inspired still life demonstrates a confident command of light, shadow, texture and composition, all executed digitally with a warmth and looseness that feels very much like Kathrin’s own voice.
