We are delighted to share some truly beautiful watercolour work from Kyung Jin Lee, a student currently studying on our Watercolour Diploma course with tutor Steven Hersey.
Kyung Jin, who is based in South Korea and brings a wealth of exhibition experience to her studies, has been exploring portraiture with a wonderfully expressive and personal style. Her submissions show real variety, from an atmospheric mountain landscape full of fresh, vibrant greens to a series of figures that demonstrate a growing confidence with watercolour’s characteristic fluidity.
The centrepiece of this selection is her painting “The Church in My Heart,” a meditative figure study depicting a praying Madonna with a church emerging softly from the folds of her robes and delicate foliage winding around her form. Kyung Jin painted this using the wet on dry technique, and describes the work as signifying peace of mind. It is a quietly powerful piece, with the layered symbolism and the gentle interplay of gold, blue and violet lending it a deeply contemplative quality.
Her portraits show an instinctive feel for the medium, with loose, confident brushwork and a lovely sensitivity in how she handles skin tones and expression. The piece featuring a figure with a flower crown is particularly charming, full of warmth and freshness, while her looser portrait study with its blooms of deep blue, teal and rose shows a student who is beginning to truly embrace the expressive possibilities of watercolour.
Kyung Jin writes that she is still working through the many techniques watercolour has to offer, and that she hopes to keep improving. Looking at this body of work, we think she is very much on the right path. We look forward to seeing more from her as she continues her studies.
