Weekend Art Challenge Results

Welcome to the results of our latest Weekend Art Challenge, where we set our students the wonderfully open task of creating artwork inspired by the letter G. It is such a brilliant idea for a challenge, because a single letter can spark so many different ideas, and once again you took it in the most imaginative directions. It is always a joy to see just how much creativity can grow from one simple prompt.

The range on show has been wonderful. We have garlic in watercolour, geese and goslings, a whole scene of gates, greens, grass and goats glowing in the sunshine, and a lovely study of a girl. There is even a beautifully observed portrait of the great American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, and one student who stumbled upon an actual golden letter G in a restaurant and turned that happy coincidence into a piece all of its own. The mediums are just as varied, with watercolour, pen and ink, acrylics, pencil and charcoal all making an appearance.

For this challenge, I was looking for something this Friday that began with the letter G when I went to a new restaurant in the neighborhood, but then I found an actual letter G as a decoration in the restaurant….what a bizarre coincidence….so I drew it in gold against a background with details from a Turkmenistan carpet that was there.
