After a break, it can feel surprisingly difficult to return to drawing or painting. You may worry that you are out of practice, that you have forgotten things, or that you should somehow pick up exactly where you left off.
The truth is, breaks are a natural part of any creative life.
Time away does not undo what you have learned. Skills do not disappear overnight. What often fades is confidence, not ability, and that comes back more quickly than you might expect once you begin again.
The key is to start gently. There is no need to jump straight into something ambitious. A simple sketch, a small study or even a few minutes of drawing is enough to reconnect.
Try not to judge the first pieces too harshly. They are not a measure of where you are “at”, they are simply a way back in.
If you would like a gentle prompt to help you restart, our Weekend Art Challenges, shared here on the blog every Friday, are designed to offer a clear starting point without pressure.
Starting again does not mean starting from scratch.
