Chibi Character Creation Course – Chloe Badkin

We are delighted to share some wonderful work from Chloe Badkin, who is studying our Chibi Character Creation Course with tutor Monique Piscarebaily.

Chibi is a style that looks deceptively simple but actually requires a real understanding of proportion, personality and design, and Chloe is taking on all of these challenges with great enthusiasm. The body proportion studies she has produced show a solid grasp of how the chibi form works across different poses and viewpoints, from front, side and three-quarter angles through to seated and more dynamic positions. Getting those oversized heads and compact little bodies to feel natural and consistent from every angle is no small feat, and Chloe is handling it with growing confidence.

What is particularly enjoyable about Chloe’s work is the care she is putting into costume design. She has been exploring how detailed, layered outfits, complete with coats, waistcoats, accessories and intricate fastenings, can be adapted to work on the chibi figure, using reference images to inform her designs while still making them her own. The results have a lovely Victorian-inspired character to them, full of personality and charm.

The finished character illustration, complete with the student’s own chibi self-portrait, shows real progress and a developing personal style that is warm, expressive and full of character.

We look forward to seeing where Chloe takes her characters next!
