Anne McDonald has recently completed our Oil Painting Certificate Course, and her work shows a confident and thoughtful approach to learning the medium. Across this selection of paintings, Anne demonstrates a willingness to experiment, refine her technique, and explore a wide range of subject matter using oil paint.
One of the strengths in Anne’s work is her growing understanding of colour mixing and surface handling. Her studies show careful consideration of tonal balance, particularly in more limited palettes, where restraint plays an important role in achieving cohesion. The colour tests and preparatory work highlight a methodical approach, building knowledge before moving into more complex compositions.
Anne has also explored a variety of subjects, from still life and interiors to more expressive, abstract work. This willingness to experiment is an important part of developing confidence with oils. In pieces such as the lighthouse study, there is a clear focus on structure, light, and atmosphere, while other works show freer mark-making and a more expressive use of paint.
The Oil Painting Certificate Course is taught by professional artist Heather Jolliffe and is designed to guide students through the essential techniques of oil painting. The course focuses on developing strong foundations while allowing students the freedom to explore their own interests and working styles.
Anne’s paintings show steady progress, curiosity and a commitment to learning, all the hallmarks of successful development in oil painting. We would like to congratulate her on her work so far and wish her every success as she continues to build on these skills in future paintings.
