Susan Douglas

We are delighted to showcase the beautiful work of student Susan Douglas, who is currently working her way through the Chinese Brush Painting – Sumi-E Course with the London Art College.

Susan has recently completed Assignment 2 and shared a wonderful series of studies exploring key techniques and subjects within traditional Chinese brush painting. The pieces include expressive brushwork studies of orchids, plum blossom and chrysanthemums, using both outline and non-outline methods. She has experimented with different types of specialist papers, such as mulberry and xuan, and noted how their textures affect both the flow of ink and level of control.

Her final composition brings together several elements – bamboo, orchids and spider chrysanthemums – to represent three of the “Four Gentlemen” in Chinese painting. It shows a thoughtful balance of tonal contrast and colour, demonstrating Susan’s growing confidence and skill in both composition and brush handling.

We are looking forward to seeing how Susan continues to develop in the second half of the course. Scroll down to view a selection of her work from this assignment below.
