We are very pleased to showcase the beautiful watercolour paintings of Iris Russell, submitted as part of the Watercolour Diploma Course.
Iris brings a thoughtful approach to her work, with each piece showing careful attention to texture, composition and colour harmony. Her beach piece features a bright and cheerful view of Kildonan Beach, filled with vibrant foxgloves and framed by a soft turquoise sea. Iris included her preparatory sketch and colour swatches, giving us a wonderful insight into her planning process.
Iris also painted the atmospheric standing stones at Machrie Moor. She was especially pleased with the colours and texture of the stones and made the inspired decision to add two flying birds to enhance the sky – an elegant finishing touch.
Alongside her two main submissions, Iris also included a selection of extra pieces. A peaceful river scene reflects her ongoing exploration of water and light. Her tonal bust study shows a controlled and limited palette approach, while a close-up painting of a shell features beautiful textures and playful background effects created with Brusho pigment and white gouache.
It is clear from her accompanying notes that Iris has a passion for her subject matter and a curiosity for trying new techniques. Her work shows both discipline and spontaneity, qualities we love to see in our watercolour students.
