Weekend Art Challenge – Coloured Pencil Delights

Welcome to our latest weekend art challenge and this week we are aiming it at those students who have a set of coloured pencils somewhere in amongst their art materials. Coloured pencil is a very popular medium and there is a lot of information and tutorials using it online if you are a newcomer to it.

Have a go at creating a piece using coloured pencils and see how you get on. You can draw any subject in any style. There is a whole host of things you can draw, if you are new to the medium, keep it simple!

  1. Medium: The focus of this challenge is coloured pencils. Create your artwork using coloured pencils as the primary medium. You can use different types of coloured pencils such as wax-based, oil-based, or watercolour pencils (but try not to use them as a water based medium), depending on your preference and availability.
  2. Subject: You have complete freedom to choose any subject for your artwork. It can be a still life, a landscape, a portrait, an animal, a fantasy scene, or anything else that inspires you. Pick something that you are passionate about or find visually appealing.
  3. Composition: Consider the composition of your artwork. Think about the placement of your subject, the background, and any additional elements you may want to include. Experiment with different arrangements and perspectives to create an engaging and visually pleasing composition.
  4. Colour Exploration: Coloured pencils offer a wide range of vibrant colours and tones. Take advantage of this and explore the possibilities of colour in your artwork. Experiment with blending, layering, and shading techniques to achieve depth, texture, and dimension.
  5. Technique and Detail: Pay attention to the details in your artwork. Use various pencil techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, or blending to create different effects and textures. Focus on capturing the fine details and textures of your subject, whether it’s the texture of fur, the delicate petals of a flower, or the play of light and shadow.

Let your imagination run wild and enjoy the process, experiment with techniques, and embrace the joy of coloured pencil art. Happy creating!

The idea of these challenges is to help students improve their skills by drawing, painting and creating regularly.

So try to submit work that you have created specifically for the challenge – or course work you are currently creating for your art course. Sometimes our challenge themes cross over with what students are learning. Our challenges are great practive for your coursework too!

Remember to submit your artwork to us via email if you would like it posted on our blog next week.
