Weekend Art Challenge – Illustrate a Quote

Welcome to our latest weekend art challenge we hope will make you all put your thinking caps on! We would like you to think of a quote and try to illustrate it. We have added a couple of ideas to get you started below, along with the links to the websites they originated.

  • Find a quote that speaks to you. It can be a famous quote from a book, movie, or song, or it can be a quote that you came up with yourself.
  • Think about how you can illustrate the quote. What images or symbols can you use to represent the words?
  • Create your illustration using any medium you like. You can use paint, markers, pencils, or even digital art software.
  • Share your illustration and explain what it means to you.

Examples of arty or popular quotes with illustration ideas…

  1. “Every artist was first an amateur.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson Illustration Idea: A progression of sketches or drawings showing an artist’s journey from a beginner to a skilled creator, symbolizing growth and dedication.
  2. “Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse Illustration Idea: A whimsical depiction of a person stepping off a ledge into a vibrant, imaginative world, representing the bravery required to express one’s creativity.
  3. “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” – Mary Poppins Illustration Idea: A playful scene featuring a person happily performing a mundane task, accompanied by colorful and animated objects to emphasize finding joy in everyday activities.
  4. “Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth.” – Pablo Picasso Illustration Idea: A surrealistic artwork blending reality and fantasy, using distorted or fragmented imagery to convey the transformative power of art.
  5. “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi Illustration Idea: A visual representation of a person holding a paintbrush, with the colors on the canvas gradually transforming into positive symbols or scenes that reflect the change they want to inspire.

Other Ideas for illustrations:

  • You could illustrate the quote literally, by depicting the images or symbols that are mentioned in the words. For example, if you chose the quote “The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” you could illustrate it with a picture of someone doing something they love, such as painting, playing music, or writing.
  • You could also illustrate the quote figuratively, by using images or symbols to represent the deeper meaning of the words. For example, if you chose the quote “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” you could illustrate it with a picture of someone being cleansed by the beauty of nature.
  • Finally, you could use your imagination to create a completely original illustration that is inspired by the quote. This could be anything you like, as long as it reflects the meaning of the words in some way.
