Weeknd Art Challenge – Horses & Foals

Welcome to our latest weekend art challenge. This week we set our students the task of drawing or painting a horse and foal – or just a horse or a foal. We have received some beautiful paintings and drawing below and we hope you enjoy viewing the collection today.

Our featured image this week is by Paul Sargeant and he has painted his horse very loosely in Watercolour. Scroll down to view it in full. We also have to mention Christines horse and foal painting in pastel below. – absolutely stunning!

We hope that everyone enjoyed this challenge. Stay tuned for a new Weekend Art Challenge posted here tomorrow.

This is a pastel painting on pastelmat.  They are beautiful creatures.
My brother is an equine vet and sent me some images of race horses at a meet. This beautiful thoroughbred caught my eye. I discovered pen and ink sketching on the Painting and Drawing course and it’s now my preferred method of working.

I love doing these challenges as they give me an incentive to keep practicing. It also gets me to draw subjects that I wouldn’t normally choose, such as horses!
A watercolour sketch of my friend’s horse.

Here’s my effort for the latest weekend challenge. I once owned a mare and foal and here I’ve used a photo of them as inspiration. I sketched with a pencil, then used a drawing pen and finished up with charcoal. At some point I’ll probably do a version of this in colour.
I have not attempted to draw a horse before so this week has been a good challenge for me. I tried copying the same photo several times. This was my fourth attempt! I’ll keep practicing!
