Weekend Art Challenge – Patterns in Nature

Welcome to the results of this weekends art challenge – Patterns in Nature. What a wonderful collection of paintings, drawings and photographs we have today! Our featured image this week is by London Art College student Joan Curnuck. Joan took a photo of some tiny succulents which are wonderful patterns in nature.

We would also like to give a big warm welcome to Alison, who has submitted her first challenge with us. Alison drew a Monkey Puzzle tree from her local park, which you can see below.

Patterns in nature is a perfect subject to experiment with, even to take one step further and do a little mini project on. There are so many incredible textures outside when you start to look in detail, definitely a fantastic one to improve techniques, textures and observational skills.

We hope that everyone enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing what our students come up with for our next challenge.

My very first posting to anything at London Art College! A monkey puzzle tree in a local park. Water soluble pencils. It was a bit of a puzzle to me but I stuck with it.

Experimenting with paint and brush textures in watercolour, painted en plein-air straight onto the paper, without any drawing first, taking advantage of the warm day. This is part of a willow tree trunk which was felled in our garden; it has been left to dry out and crack,  to  become a bug hotel.

This an acrylic on canvas – it’s about 6×6. Recently, I had to cut off the lower branches from a Serbian Fir, and noticed the trunk patterns with their colours and contours – amazing really!
