Weekend Art Challenge – Owls

Welcome to this weekends art challenge celebrating the Owl. We have had some amazing entries this week. Our featured image is by Cerys Susannah Rees who said – Some sleepy barn owls welcoming the weekend and Autumn! It is superbly painted, well done Cerys.

We wanted to bring everyone’s attention to the amazing artwork by student Ilse Hagley, who created her owl as a collage. She has ripped tiny pieces of coloured, painted paper and made an amazing collage. We absolutely love it!! It was definitely worth sore fingers!

Finally we also are so excited to show the artwork by Nina Phillips who has gone all out with actual feathers and amazing eyes for her owl piece. Well done Nina!!

We hope that you have all enjoyed seeing the results of this weeks challenge artwork. Do stay tuned for another challenge tomorrow.

My collage owl, very sore fingers ripping papers in small circles.

I’ve gone a little over the top with this weekend challenge. I’ve gone for a very mixed medium effect. I’ve used dry watercolour pencils, children’s and acrylic paints, googley eyes and soft white feathers.

Owls. More specifically a re-interpretation of the wise Owl of Athena, classical symbol of learning & knowledge. Re–imagined for this September I added a coursebook, replaced olives with apples (is the fallen one channeling a bit of Newton?). And naturally the original 3 letters just had to be changed…! Based on a coin issued in Athens 5th cent. BC.

Image of a cute comic owl illustrator doing his favorite work on the river bank. I have used color pencils and a technical pen.

Owls. 2 versions from the same photo. One in gouache and collage done with birch paper bark and lichen and the other in pastels.

I’ve entitled this week’s challenge: Marsh Hunting near the North Norfolk Coast – it’s a water mixable oil sketch on A4 board.

Rosalind Spilling – baby owls – watercolour.
In acrylics on paper, this started as an abstract and I feel has turned into an owl.
