Emma Arthur

I felt this was a difficult assignment, except perhaps the Japanese technique where open lines and simplified shapes are used.  Mastering ink painting is a long term process and feel I have a long way to go before I get to the point where I am happy with my work. I have read  various  websites where sumi e artists say they are still learning even although they have been painting for many years.  I realise that I will not be able to produce perfect works of art after this course is finished.  It is the starting point of a long journey. I bought two new types of paper for this assignment, a new large brush and new ink. The ink is called Yusutomo Black Sumi Ink.  In the last assignments I used an ink stick.  This time I wanted to try some ready make ink.  I am very pleased with the ink but found it more difficult to get the various shades of black / grey.
