Sabine Krappmann

Here are three illustrations by botanical student Sabine Krappmann. Sabine completed three different studies of the sunflower using different techniques. The first study is a sepia pen and ink drawing, allowing Sabine to describe the areas using fine pen lines and texture. The second study is a watercolour study with a sepia under drawing in some areas which helps to firm up the lines, particularly around the petals and the edge of the leaves.

The final study is a combination of the sepia pen and ink with watercolour too. Pen has been added on top of the watercolour to help create texture on the leaves and define the leaf veins. These studies show, how that the same image – no matter what the subject, can look very different using two mediums. Why not give it a go yourself!
