Welcome to new tutor Monique Piscaer Bailey!

We would like to officially introduce a new tutor to our team – Monique Piscaer Bailey. Monique is going to be helping Spencer Hill tutoring our Digital Illustration Course. We asked if Monique would write a little about herself and show some of her work below. We hope that you enjoy reading all about her!

I am Monique Piscaer Bailey. I am an artist, a children’s book illustrator and an art teacher.

I was born and raised in South Africa. My father was an old school sign-writer and amazing oil and airbrush artist. As a little girl I would sit and watch him in his studio, and I could see the joy that took over him when he was painting. It was something I desperately wanted a slice of.

One day (I must have been six or seven years old) I found an illustration in a book and I decided I wanted to copy it. I quietly sat in my room and using a cheap piece of paper and my school pencil crayons, I did just that. I copied it line by line and I got it! It was as if I’d always understood the mechanics of drawing. It came naturally …the visual information, seen through my eyes came out of my hand, guided by the pencil. I knew then and there that art was going to be an integral part of who I am and what I wanted to do.

Digital art is a wonderful medium. You can edit an manipulate lines, make objects bigger or smaller, rotate parts or flip them on their head. You can scan in your drawings, add backgrounds, retrace them and explore the tools to create different techniques. The colours are vibrant and explosive but can also be transparent or layered. The options are endless and the learning never stops.

Spencer Hill has taught me everything I know about digital illustration. He is a fantastic teacher and a beautiful human with a quirky sense of humour. We get along like peas and carrots & I couldn’t be happier working with him. It is an absolute honour to be part of the London Art College and its dynamic team.

Here’s to transforming your art to a whole new realm in the same way he transformed mine.
