This time I have two pictures which I would like to talk about, \u00a0\u201cThomas\u201d the cat and \u201cBoxer with Toy\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas is a commissioned pet portrait\u00a0drawn on\u00a0Daler Rowney Mixed Media\u00a0paper. \u00a0Boxer with Toy is a piece for\u00a0London Art College\u00a0and I decided to use\u00a0Arches Hot Pressed Paper\u00a0for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6743\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1-copy.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1-copy-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1-copy-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both of these pieces are much darker in tone in comparison to the Lion so I\u00a0used a wider range of the B\u00a0pencils. \u00a0I found the best pencil for the initial outline was 4H, slightly darker\u00a0in tone to the 8H for the lion and a little easier to see in my opinion. \u00a0Still as easy to lay down and pick\u00a0up\u00a0again with my putty\u00a0eraser though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6744\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4-copy.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/4-copy-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pencils laid down really well onto both of these papers. \u00a0The\u00a0mixed media paper\u00a0has a\u00a0rougher texture\u00a0which for some pencils, I have found, means they don\u2019t blend out too easily. \u00a0What I like about these pencils is they are\u00a0really good for blending, especially as you move up the\u00a0B range. \u00a0I use a\u00a0bamboo clothe to smudge\u00a0it and they blend great. \u00a0I prefer this for larger areas and the tortillions for more specific areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6745\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5-copy.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5-copy-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/5-copy-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The only downside to something that blends easy \u2013 you have to\u00a0be careful about accidentally smudging! \u00a0Keep that drawing hand on a clean piece of paper placed over your drawing and make sure it doesn\u2019t move about too much. \u00a0Any residue it picks up will spread over the rest of the drawing paper. \u00a0However, because they are so easy to rub off it\u2019s not a major issue, just a little annoying.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DoyToyWM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6751\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DoyToyWM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DoyToyWM.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DoyToyWM-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DoyToyWM-300x412.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This time\u00a0I had a breakage\u00a0with the 8B pencil whilst sharpening it. Damn! I may have mentioned before that I purchased a\u00a0Swordfish sharpener\u00a0which has made a massive difference to the point I can get on all my pencils. With the\u00a0graphites there is an\u00a0automatic \u201cstop\u201d\u00a0so it shouldn\u2019t over-do it and break the point, with the\u00a0pastels it will just keep going!! \u00a0I think I must have dropped the 8B at some point as it was the only one to keep breaking. \u00a0Not sure, but will have to keep this in mind for the next piece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sharpener-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6748\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sharpener-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sharpener-copy.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sharpener-copy-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With both these pieces I\u00a0made quite a number of changes\u00a0from the first step all the way until the end. \u00a0It\u2019s been awkward in the past to be able to undo mistakes at the end of a picture. \u00a0Now I\u2019m not saying you can delete major changes\u00a0\u2013 I couldn\u2019t delete half the face or a whole eye! \u2013 but I could certainly do\u00a0more than with previous pencils. \u00a0For example,\u00a0Thomas\u2019s tail wasn\u2019t quite right. \u00a0I\u2019d made it a little too bushy. \u00a0Not a problem \u2013 I could take it back and easily update it without too many issues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170202_225530-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6747\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170202_225530-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170202_225530-copy.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170202_225530-copy-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170202_225530-copy-300x533.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0ball in the boxer picture was too dark\u00a0also, which meant I was losing the spikes against the background. \u00a0Not a problem! \u00a0Putty eraser to the rescue\u00a0and small dabs brought the graphite out just enough to show a little more detail. \u00a0As I\u2019ve mentioned,\u00a0not major changes but little bits\u00a0that I found more difficult with previous graphite pencils.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170128_210809-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6752\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170128_210809-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170128_210809-copy.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170128_210809-copy-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170128_210809-copy-300x533.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the\u00a0finer fur detail, even on the darker sections, the\u00a04H\/2H\u00a0were what I found worked to give the definition. \u00a0When a darker undertone is\u00a0laid down, the\u00a0harder pencil seems to do a lovely job of defining it\u00a0and kind of smudging it out a little. \u00a0It\u2019s hard to explain but the harder pencil over the softer works really nicely in getting that detail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ThomasWM-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6750\" src=\"http:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ThomasWM-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ThomasWM-copy.jpg 476w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ThomasWM-copy-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ThomasWM-copy-300x403.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSO,\u00a0PRO\u2019S:<br \/>\n\u2022 Easy to blend\/smudge<br \/>\n\u2022 Easy to erase<br \/>\n\u2022 Soft, so great to draw with a light hand and still get good tone<br \/>\n\u2022 Nice range between each pencil in terms of tones and very easy to change the tone of an individual pencil with a little more pressure<br \/>\n\u2022 Easy to use on rougher surfaces as well as smooth.<br \/>\n\u2022 Although I had one pencil break it\u2019s been the first so far which, compared to the previous Derwents, is very good going!<\/p>\n<p>CON\u2019S:<br \/>\n\u2022 Easy to smudge \u2013 watch that drawing hand! \u00a0Make sure too to keep an eye on the material you use to lay over the drawing as this will pick up more graphite and work onto the rest of the paper.<br \/>\n\u2022 Sharp points can break far more easily on the higher numbered B pencils as they are soft.<\/p>\n<p>And I am finding it hard to find more con\u2019s!
