I know I speak for all of my fellow tutors when I say that, in addition to tailoring our feedback to each individual student, we also keep a constant eye out to make sure the tuition we deliver is relevant to the art world as it is today, while incorporating all the wisdom and experience of London Art College&#8217;s long and respected history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a responsibility that was particularly upfront in my mind, when I recently worked on the latest update of our Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, fantasy and science-fiction illustration was often seen as a specialist corner of the art world. Dragons, spaceships and imaginary worlds were thought of as something quite separate from &#8220;serious&#8221; art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, fantasy and sci-fi artists are designing blockbuster films, bestselling books, graphic novels, video games, board games, concept art, streaming series, museum exhibitions and even architectural visualisations. The skills needed to create believable imaginary worlds are now some of the most sought-after in the creative industries. (It&#8217;s my belief that even in the age of AI, this will remain the case-as every good science fiction story teaches us, ultimately human ingenuity always triumphs over machines!)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing I particularly love about tutoring this London Art College course is that it isn&#8217;t just about drawing dragons or spaceships. It&#8217;s about learning how to tell stories through pictures. Every creature, costume, landscape and machine should make the viewer wonder what happened before the scene\u2014and what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also an excellent follow-on course for students coming from Fine Art, Botanical Painting, Animal Portraits or&nbsp;even Landscape courses. Those disciplines teach observation, colour, composition and technique. Fantasy illustration simply asks one extra question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;What if?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if the botanical knowledge you&#8217;ve developed became the basis for designing alien forests? What if your understanding of anatomy helped create believable mythical creatures?
