We are thrilled to share the work of Alice Faux-Nightingale, who has been studying our Illustrating Children’s Books Diploma<\/a> with tutor Paul Weaver. Alice juggles a full-time career in academic research with her passion for illustration, and looking at this wonderful collection of work, we think it is safe to say she has found her calling!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice came to the course with a clear goal. To develop her skills in constructing whole page illustrations, building convincing backgrounds, bringing characters to life, and using colour and perspective to tell a story. It is clear from every piece she has produced that she has embraced all of this with enormous enthusiasm and real talent. Her work has a wonderful warmth and wit to it, and a genuine understanding of what makes children’s illustration sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The range on display here is impressive. A beautifully atmospheric city scene, rendered in moody black and white with real drama and depth, sits alongside a brilliantly funny pair of herons in wellington boots that would delight any young reader. There are richly coloured storybook spreads full of character and charm, a wonderfully expressive guilty dragon, a gorgeous tortoise surrounded by admiring birds, and sketchbook pages of cats studied from every angle with real dedication. Each piece shows someone who not only draws beautifully but thinks carefully about narrative, humour and the reader’s experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice has already illustrated two books for self-publishing authors and has a clear sense of where she wants to take her career. We have no doubt that she has a very exciting journey ahead of her, and we are delighted to have been part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
