<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThinking back to the beginning of the digital illustration course, the thought of using an iPad to illustrate my ideas seemed quite awkward to me, coming from a traditional background of creating artwork. However, I knew that there were definite advantages to it – and that I still needed to learn, explore and experience it in order to form a solid and well-informed opinion about working digitally and if it may prove useful to me and my own workflow, at least to a certain extent. Thus, I embarked on this course-adventure into the digital realm of illustration, together with my tutor Monique Bailey, who proved to be a helpful guide (through the icon jungle of GIMP and Inkscape), empathetic supporter (in times of tool-based despair), insightful troubleshooter (e.g. when you and the software disagreed on the technical execution) and a great motivator (who makes it all sound so easy and is always in a good mood). Well… Of course, one still has to put in the time, effort and willingness to allow for some rounds of trial and error during the digital process in order to achieve the desired visual output. No matter which assignment… and sometimes working digitally can be disheartening, annoying, time-consuming but it can also be highly energizing, rewarding, a lot of fun and real quick in the end (believe it or not). Just don’t give up and you’ll master it! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One thing I’ve learned in this course is: it’s key to stay motivated and maintain one’s eagerness to learn and conquer the digital ways of working creatively. I kept thinking, “You got this! Come on, this can’t be THAT tricky” and then I’d just tackle it head on. Always with my “wild card” or wiz at hand (Monique), if needed. By completing each assignment, one after another, I felt more and more accomplished. I also realized how my understanding of digital illustration shifted positively from partial rejection to acceptance and how useful it can be – even for someone like me who is quite profoundly rooted in the analog world of art and illustration. Completing this course truly broadened my horizon (generally and regarding my personal perception), made me realize the pros & cons of digital (as well as analog artwork), improved my software skills (definitely!), increased my personal and creative resilience (esp. when it comes to adapting technically\/ skill-wise in an ever-changing world) and truly enriched my workflow (by providing additional possible approaches to my existing creative process). This course taught me a lot that I find highly rewarding. I really enjoyed this creative, mind-boggling journey through the digital art landscape and that I was in such capable hands like Monique’s.
