What a treat this week’s challenge turned out to be! We asked our students to pick up their pencils, pastels, and paints and turn their attention to the delicious world of cakes and biscuits, and the results were an absolute feast for the eyes. From birthday celebration cakes to stacks of pancakes, from biscuit assortments to pop art confections, our students brought tremendous creativity, variety and skill to the theme. Whether working from a cherished personal memory or raiding the biscuit tin for reference, it is clear that everyone had a wonderful time with this one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The range of media on show was particularly impressive, with watercolour, gouache, pastel pencils, oil pastels, Derwent Inktense pencils, acrylic pens and paints, and even casein all making an appearance. Students explored everything from delicate still life compositions to bold, graphic pop art designs, proving that there is no single way to approach a subject as joyful as this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special mention goes to Phil H, whose pop art take on the theme was a brilliantly inventive choice, combining watercolour, acrylic, casein, salt, masking fluid and masking tape to create a wonderfully textured and visually striking piece. It is always exciting to see a student push a challenge in a completely unexpected direction!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are so grateful to everyone who took part and shared their work with us. Thank you to Ni Ni, Rosalind, TJ, Nina P, Nicki C and Phil H for a truly wonderful and mouth-watering collection of artwork. We hope you all enjoyed the process as much as we enjoyed seeing the results!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cakes are special for celebrations! This is with watercolour, I added white gouache and some pastel pencils. Reference photo is mine, taken by a friend at my birthday party 3 years ago. That cake was baked and decorated by a friend also. It was a special moment. A little twist of challenge as I am doing composition studies for my portrait course.

Elvis Presley Cake, this cake really does \u00a0exist, made with Pineapple, cream cheese and topped with pecans! My version is done with Derwent Inktense pencils and Graphik line marker. It\u2019s the closest I get to making a cake!
