{"id":35255,"date":"2026-05-26T06:22:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T06:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/?p=35255"},"modified":"2026-04-04T14:24:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T14:24:14","slug":"watercolour-diploma-course-andrea-still","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.london-artcollege.co.uk\/news\/2026\/05\/watercolour-diploma-course-andrea-still\/","title":{"rendered":"Watercolour Diploma Course \u2013 Andrea Still"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are delighted to share this thoughtful and creative watercolour by Andrea Still, who is studying our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonartcollege.co.uk\/art-courses\/watercolour-diploma\/\">Watercolour Diploma Course<\/a> with tutor Steven Hersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Assignment 4, Andrea was asked to paint a still life, and what she has produced is anything but conventional. Rather than simply arranging objects and painting what she saw, Andrea took a genuinely creative approach to her composition. She gathered a beautifully curated collection of seaside objects, a favourite ornamental jug, a cockle shell and several mussel shells, and arranged them on a white surface. But instead of a plain backdrop, she introduced a window, and beyond it, a great black-backed seagull gazing in at the shells from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a wonderfully inventive idea. The gull, the shells and the jug all carry that same coastal, seaside atmosphere, so the composition feels unified and purposeful rather than contrived. There is something quietly humorous and charming about the bird peering in, as if equally drawn to the treasures on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrea worked carefully through her composition using thumbnail sketches and colour testing before beginning the painting, which shows real artistic discipline. The finished piece is painted in a restrained, cool palette of cobalt blue, Payne&#8217;s grey, burnt sienna and touches of transparent orange, giving the whole work a calm, silvery quality that suits the subject beautifully. The jug is particularly well observed, with convincing curves, subtle reflections and a lovely sense of its ceramic weight. The seagull is handled with confidence and the delicate beak detail, with its spot of orange, draws the eye pleasingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a piece that demonstrates not just developing technical skill but also real creative thinking, and that combination is something to be very proud of.
