We are delighted to share the results of this week’s Alphabet Challenge, where our students were asked to draw or paint anything beginning with the letter S. And what a wonderful, varied collection of artwork we have to share with you today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter S clearly sparked plenty of inspiration. We had sheep, both serious and gloriously funny, squirrels, a stunning stallion, strawberries, snowscapes, seascapes, a savanna landscape, still life studies, and even Scooby-Doo and Shaggy making a very welcome appearance. There was something genuinely joyful about seeing how differently everyone interpreted the same simple brief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mediums varied beautifully too, with students working in watercolour, pastel pencils, charcoal, coloured pencil, paint and pen and Japanese watercolour on Washi paper, which produced some really atmospheric results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we had to pick a favourite this week, it would have to be Ni Ni’s dramatic depiction of Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan, inspired by Raphael. Worked in watercolour, white pen and pastel pencils, it is an ambitious and beautifully executed piece that really stopped us in our tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had these strawberries sitting in my fridge – so decided to draw them in pastels for this challenge.

My lovely tutor Paul Weaver gave me an extra exercise to do to help with improving my tonal values and this charcoal and pen drawing also fits the weekly challenge as it begins with “s”, a still life of a green pepper, brown onion and garlic bulb… I really pushed myself, and do feel that this was really helpful practice…

I\u2019m lacking the creative muse at the moment and wasn\u2019t sure if I should send my latest illustration but I\u2019m going with \u201cEnjoy the process and keep it pressure free\u201d. Trying to ignore the self imposed pressure that every drawing has to be a certain standard undoubtedly blocks creativity.
