They feel stuck, uninspired or unsure what to draw next.

In practice, it is very difficult to run out of things to draw. More often, the problem is that the subjects around us feel too ordinary to be worth attention.

Ordinary subjects are excellent drawing material. The same cup, chair or window can be drawn many times, each time revealing something new. Repetition is not boring – it is how observation deepens.

You can also revisit subjects using different approaches. Change the scale, medium, viewpoint or lighting. A familiar subject can feel completely different with a small shift in focus.

Running out of ideas is often a sign that you are expecting inspiration to arrive fully formed. Sometimes it helps to simply begin and let the subject reveal itself.

If you would like a ready-made theme to work from, our Weekend Art Challenges, posted here on the blog every Friday, are designed to spark ideas without pressure.

There is always something worth drawing, even if it is right in front of you.

If you would like to receive a roundup of all of our blog posts once a week to keep you inspired in your inbox, why not sign up to our newsletter.
