This weekend\u2019s art challenge invited students to slow down and take inspiration from the natural world, with the theme of wild flowers. Whether growing in hedgerows, fields, or springing up unexpectedly in gardens and pathways, wild flowers are full of charm, variety, and beauty. Perfect for observational drawing and loose, expressive painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artwork this week has been wonderfully varied. Some students created soft, watercolour sketches with light washes and gentle lines, while others focused on more detailed botanical studies. We particularly loved the Triptych painting by student Perry, scroll down to see it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big thank you to everyone who took part. We hope it inspires you to pick up a pencil or brush and go exploring in nature too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top piece is a daisy growing in my garden lawn drawn from life in pencil, I wanted the white petals to stand out against the dark background.
Below that is a dandelion head also found in my lawn! It is made using ink, acrylics and white pen – I also wanted the white feathery seed flights to show up against the black background.

“I painted these lilac wild flowers, maybe a type of cornflower?… back in August.
They were growing next to the River Nethy, in the village of Nethy Bridge, Strathspey in the Highlands of Scotland. I used watercolour paints on 350gsm watercolour paper….and added the ladybird for fun!”

The photo was taken during a walk on holiday in Devon last month. I drew it this weekend in my nature journal (Stillman and Birn Zeta series) using polychromos pencils and a Staedler pigment liner.
