Welcome to our latest weekend art challenge where we set our students the task of creating artwork on the subject of Marine Life. The results are nothing short of spectacular! From elegant jellyfish to playful dolphins, the creativity below is truly inspiring. It’s always a joy to see how each artist brings their unique perspective to the theme and this challenge was no exception. It was inspired by an essay by Kathleen Jamie about the hvalsalen in Bergen, and I approached it like an editorial illustration.

I\u2019ve drawn a seahorse using dry watercolour pencils with acrylic pens to outline. For the background I\u2019ve used watercolour pencils and I\u2019ve added water to give the effect of being under the sea. To finish off I\u2019ve use a googly eye and cut out fish.

This is a bottlenose dolphin made using pencil, watercolour and masking fluid. I have to paint water for my next assignment, so good practice!!

I had another go at the dolphin, and was really pleased with the water but when I removed the masking fluid from the dolphin and it took the paper away too – hence the dolphin shape being cut out!!!

I actually did the painting of ‘Spurtle the Turtle,’ last year. It lives in a sunken large pool, at Mapperton House in Dorset.

Then, my other two watercolour illustrations are from my children’s book, Cookie’s Caravan Holiday…..(the one that you kindly uploaded a blog about last year)………It’s where Cookie the guinea pig, makes friends with a clever hermit crab called Kevin. She finds out how all the hermit crabs line up in size order, so that they can wriggle out, then move into the new homes and recycle their shells! I saw it on a Sir David Attenborough ‘Planet Earth’ video…..and decided to develop it into my children’s story.\u00a0

These are the two original drawings before all the text was added….they were set out as a double page spread, showing the smallest hermit crab on the left…with the largest crab, called Kevin talking to Cookie, on the right.

(Above and Below) For this challenge, I made two drawings – I was thinking of the artwork from The Yellow Submarine (especially the part\u00a0in the Sea of Monsters). That movie has always been a huge inspiration to me!
