This weekend\u2019s art challenge was simple: draw or paint something beginning with the letter C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn\u2019t mind what it was\u2014car, cloud, crab, coffee, or anything else that sprang to mind. The idea was to keep things loose and let students decide where to take it. It\u2019s a good exercise for thinking differently and trying something new without overcomplicating things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As always, the results were varied and creative. Some students went for everyday objects, others for animals and a few added their own twist. It\u2019s great to see how one single letter can open up so many ideas and approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a sketch of a coyote (leaping for it\u2019s prey) for this weeks challenge. It\u2019s made using watercolour and coloured pencil. I have learnt that the difference between a coyote and a wolf is that the coyote is smaller, has a more pointed nose and is usually reddish in colour. Amazing the things you learn when you\u2019re looking for something beginning with C to draw!!!

My drawing for this weekend’s challenge is sort of “recycled” from the previous challenge. I didn’t have time to finish the drawing of my favorite art materials, so I used it for Letter C – here I emphasized contour and color, along with my favorite colored pencils (and a can of beer, for inspiration!).

The letter C was fun. Spring is coming to Vermont and, though I love the cosy winter when I get to light candles, I’m ready to put them aside. Drawn with ink liners and Derwent watercolor pens. Crocuses are popping up in my yard! A nice welcome. Drawn with ink liners and Derwent watercolor pens. Curlicues are something I do to relax and to work on spatial coordination and color schemes.
