This past weekend, we asked our students to take on the theme of birds in our latest Weekend Art Challenge, and the results have been nothing short of exceptional! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students have used a wide range of mediums, watercolour being a popular one, capturing the lightness and the beauty of soft fluffy feathers. We also have a few detailed pencil sketches showcasing intricate plumage, and we even have some striking digital art pieces that have brought birds to life with a modern edge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We couldn\u2019t be prouder of everyone who participated, and we encourage you to view all the pieces below that our students submitted for our challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(4) This is another image that I have copied from the artist Jake Winkler. A tawny owl in flight. I do like the expanse of wings and colours\/patterns that are identified. I quickly sketched in pencil first and then I added watercolour, with speckles of splashed paint, Jake’s style. I like to attempt a different style of painting occasionally.

I was lucky to see the artist “Jake Winkler” last year and I decided to copy one of his ‘flamingo birds’ paintings. I sketched it first with pencil and then added pink, salmon and blue\/grey shading with watercolour paints. I like the stance and irregular order in height of the flamingoes….and their reflections in the river. I hadn’t quite planned on the blurred effect of the legs in water, but it seems to work. Again, it’s best seen from a distance.

Last year I painted a scene from Mudeford bay, onto canvas, using tubes of watercolour paint. I even added some silver paint and glimmers of blue glitter paint (which were my children’s from many years ago!) It was taken from a video image of several wading birds, dipping their beaks into the muddy water. In addition, I added bright yellow onto the wings and splattered yellow spots of paint here and there. Finally, I wanted a ‘wet look’ and encouraged drips of watery paint to drip down the canvas. This is the largest painting that I’ve done to date and it’s best seen from a distance.

I wanted to sketch a black bird, perched on a branch. I used a simple black\/brown watercolour paint for it’s body and branch on standard watercolour paper. I then I really enjoyed adding more finer detail using my black fine liner for the feathers and holly leaves.
