Hello and welcome to our weekly art challenge results! We are so impressed by all the students who submitted their paintings and drawings to this weekend’s art challenge on lighthouses. You have shown us your creativity, skill, and passion for art, and we are delighted to share your work with our readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our featured image this week is by Catherine Thompson, who has taken a unique and thoughtful approach to the challenge. She said: “I\u2019ve looked at it a bit differently and likened the way the lighthouse is trying to keep the boats safe to the caring people in our lives.” She used mixed media, including pen and ink, watercolour, and acrylics, to create this beautiful and meaningful piece. We love how she captured the contrast between the dark stormy sea and the bright warm light of the lighthouse with the text. Well done, Catherine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Colossus of Rhodes – bring one of the Antique Wonders of the World. The legend tells that the monumental bronze figure of the God Helios was set at the entrance of the port of Rhodes, and hence the picture of the Colossus holding up a large light to guide the ships was introduced by Maarten van Heemskerck in the 16th century. An old print served as a model for my drawing in mixed media.\u201c

Not one but TWO. My hometown is unusual for having an old – and a new lighthouse, apparently the only example in eastern Australia. Because they remind me of where I grew up I did a straight, no-nonsense rendition. Now I feel sentimental.
