We are thrilled to showcase an incredible amount of artwork for our weekend art challenge this week, submitted by our students. The challenge encouraged them to explore the captivating world of birds and create artwork that captured their beauty and essence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One standout piece that caught our attention was by student Dinah Barker, titled “Nesting Puffin, Staffa Island,” which was created using the medium of pastels. Dinah employs pastels to create a soft, ethereal background of long grass, imbuing the scene with a touch of abstraction. The choice of a neutral palette adds to the overall serenity and tranquility of the composition, allowing the puffin to become the focal point of the artwork. Well done Dinah for an excellent piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to extend our appreciation to all the students who participated in this challenge. The level of creativity and the variety of artistic styles exhibited in the submissions were truly impressive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our challenge was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, and we are pleased to announce that due to its popularity, we will be hosting this challenge again next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A brand new challenge will be revealed soon, so stay tuned to find out what subject you might be painting or drawing tomorrow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is painted in oils and is a tawny owl. I wanted to focus on the main wing and see how I could blend the oils to show the individual feathers. I have put a dark, dusky background with a very tiny hint of trees so that the owl stands out.

‘Flocks of Birds at Sunset’: This is a drawing made in Pythagorio on the Greek Isle of Samos. It shows two large flocks of birds at sunset over the sea. I tried to capture the characteristic flight of birds when they gather together and head towards their sleeping place to rest for the night at the time when the glary light of the sun fades to red.

The A4 size picture on 130 gsm sketching paper is carried out with (very cheap) coloured pencils which did not blend in very well, fine liners (birds and some shades on the water surface), (dried out) Chinese white, and a bit of watercolour in purple and pink (water surface).
