Weekend Art Challenge Results – Vintage Tractors or Vehicles!

Welcome to this week’s Weekend Art Challenge results, where we set our students the task of painting vintage tractors or vehicles. For many of our students this was a step well outside their comfort zone, and it is all the more impressive to see how brilliantly everyone rose to the occasion!

The entries this week span a wonderful range of vehicles and eras. Rusty, abandoned tractors proved a popular choice, with their peeling paint, weathered bodywork and sense of history making for wonderfully atmospheric subjects. Alongside these sat a classic car painted from a visit to a car museum, a Morris Minor toy car in watercolour, a yellow biplane, and Nina P’s impressively researched 1898 Winton Stanhope Phaeton, rendered in mixed media with a wonderfully textured floor effect created using gesso. Nina also couldn’t resist adding a penny farthing as a second entry, and we are very glad she did!

Mediums across the entries included watercolour, coloured pencils, watercolour pencils, acrylics, pencil and mixed media, and it was lovely to see students reflecting on the process as they went. Rosalind noted that pastel paper proved a little too grainy for watercolour pencils, a useful discovery, and Catherine admitted that vehicles are not her usual subject, before producing not one but two beautifully observed tractor studies. Aubrey brought a lovely poetic touch to his entry, imagining the little creatures that might have made their home in a long-forgotten tractor left in a field.

There is something endlessly evocative about old vehicles, and this week’s entries have captured that sense of nostalgia and history beautifully. Well done to everyone who took part!

I created it on A4 paper using watercolour and coloured pencils.

Did the picture from a tracing.  Watercolour pencils on pastel paper but discovered it is not the best type for these pencils: too grainy for detail.

This is an old tractor that has been abandoned, the body is falling from the wheel chassis, the blue bodywork and the light give an idea of what it was like in its heyday! I have taken the image from pixels and used pencil and watercolour.

Weekend Challenge: Vintage tractors/cars: 1898 Winton Stanhope Phaeton
For this challenge I used mixed medium: acrylic paint and pens. Crayons were also used.
For the ground I used gesso, paint over it with acrylic paint and using a ruler drew lines which has given the effect of a worn outdoor flooring.

This weeks challenge was a big challenge as I don’t draw vehicles at all!! I got the reference photo from pixels, it’s a rusty old tractor and I was drawn to the red cylinder on the bonnet.

Here is my vintage tractor drawing from this weekend’s art challenge.
I imagine little birds or animals would love to sit on the dilapidated vintage tractor as it lies forgotten in the corner of a field somewhere…

Vintage car or tractor part 2: I know it’s neither a car or tractor but I could not resist a Penny farthing. I’ve used a 6B pencil and a black acrylic pen.
