Welcome to our latest Weekend Art Challenge results post, and what a wonderful, buzzing collection of artwork you have all created! This week we asked our students to turn their attention to the world of buzzy things, and they responded with a fantastic array of insects, pollinators and garden visitors, rendered in a gorgeous variety of media. From delicate watercolours to bold acrylics, pencil drawings to fine liner pen, the creativity on show has been truly impressive.
One of our students, Alicia, chose to shine a spotlight on the Rusty Patched Bumblebee, a species native to North America whose population has sadly declined by almost 90%. A reminder of just how precious these little pollinators are. We hope her artwork helps to raise awareness of this lovely creature and the conservation efforts underway to protect it.
We had other bees enjoying the heatwave courtesy of Alice M, who combined watercolour and pen to gorgeous effect. Amanda made us smile with her wonderfully characterful little bee having a snooze on the job, and we think every garden probably has one of those! Catherine brought us something wonderfully unexpected with her fine liner and watercolour study of a ladybird larva, a creature she described as looking like something from outer space, and we couldn’t agree more! Rosalind captured a beautiful Emerald Green butterfly perched on her granddaughter’s hand, painted quickly and freshly in watercolour from a photograph, and the spontaneity really shows in the loveliest way. Aubrey treated us to a delightful butterflies doodle, full of charm and movement, and Sandi H gave us a striking Peacock butterfly. Suneeta K worked in Derwent Drawing Pencils on Strathmore mixed media paper to produce another beautiful piece.
And then there is Ni Ni, who as ever threw herself into the challenge with tremendous energy, submitting not one but three pieces, a gouache study on mixed media paper, an acrylic painting on card, and a vivid Green Grasshopper painted with acrylics on a mixed media board. The range of subjects and media across those three pieces alone is impressive!
Thank you so much to everyone who took part this week. It is always such a joy to see how differently our students interpret each challenge and the Buzzy Things theme clearly sparked some real inspiration. We hope you enjoyed creating your artwork as much as we have enjoyed looking at it!
