Drawing and Painting Diploma Course – Johan Vanden Borre

We are delighted to share the work of Johan Vanden Borre, who is studying our Drawing and Painting Diploma Course with tutor Alan Dedman. Johan joins us from Flanders in Belgium, and his enthusiasm for the course and for developing his skills shines through every piece he submits.

What strikes you immediately about Johan’s work is his confidence with line and his strong instinct for composition. Working primarily in pen and ink, Johan has been exploring a wonderful variety of subjects, from atmospheric landscape sketches alive with dramatic skies and rolling countryside, to architectural studies that show a real sensitivity to structure, perspective and the play of light and shadow across buildings and surfaces.

His tonal work is particularly impressive. Whether capturing the moody, rain-swept drama of a stormy sky, the quiet stillness of a lakeside cabin nestled among pine trees, or the characterful facade of an old shopfront with its rich texture and shadow, Johan brings a confident and expressive line to every subject. His interiors show the same ambition, with a wonderfully detailed junk shop scene demonstrating a real ability to organise a complex, cluttered space into a convincing and engaging composition.

Johan has also been exploring mixed media, combining graphite and aquarelle to beautiful effect in his holiday memento piece, a sun-drenched Santorini scene of domed churches and whitewashed walls that has a lovely softness and atmosphere alongside its crisp architectural linework.

It is a real pleasure to follow Johan’s progress through the course, and we look forward to seeing where his drawing journey takes him next!
