We are delighted to share the charming final assignment work of Catalina Tapia, who has been studying our Digital Illustration Diploma Course.
Catalina is based in Ireland and came to the course wanting to improve her drawing skills and learn more about the world of illustration, with a particular goal of developing her confidence in digital media. Looking at these two delightful pages, it is clear she has done exactly that.
The illustrations form part of a children’s story featuring a little girl called Vicky and a very endearing woodlouse who has taken a liking to her toothbrush. The premise alone is wonderfully inventive, and Catalina brings it to life with real warmth and personality. Vicky is a brilliantly expressive character, her indignation absolutely palpable in one scene and her generosity of spirit equally clear in the other. The woodlouse, complete with his very own personalised toothbrush, is completely loveable.
The digital artwork has a lovely hand drawn quality to it, with soft colours, charming details and a consistent visual style that would sit very happily on the shelves of any children’s bookshop. The bathroom setting, with its grid tiled walls and warm wooden furniture, gives the story a cosy, domestic feel that young readers would immediately recognise and enjoy.
We think Catalina has a lovely illustrative voice and we look forward to seeing where her storytelling takes her next!
