Student Spotlight: Tiffany Lai

We are absolutely delighted to congratulate Tiffany Lai on completing the Drawing and Painting Diploma Course with a well-deserved Distinction. Tiffany studied under the guidance of tutor Paul Weaver, and the results of their time together speak for themselves.

When Tiffany first enrolled, her goals were clear: to develop her technique and knowledge across areas such as perspective and colour theory, and to learn to draw from imagination. Having already had experience with watercolour and acrylic painting, as well as life drawing sessions, she came to the course with a good foundation, and it is wonderful to see how far she has taken it.

The work Tiffany has produced across the course is genuinely impressive in its range and ambition. Her watercolour portrait, set against a sweeping misty mountain landscape, shows a confident understanding of tone and atmosphere, with the figure rendered with warmth and sensitivity. Her coastal scene, with wildflowers tumbling down towards the sea and Beachy Head Lighthouse shimmering in the distance, is full of light and energy, the loose brushwork in the foreground beautifully contrasting with the soft washes of sky and water. A still life of watermelon slices demonstrates her ability to capture texture and translucency, with the juicy pinks and greens handled with real freshness. Then there is the extraordinary pointillist autumn woodland scene, a dog standing small amid the golden trees, where Tiffany has shown a wonderful sense of colour, pattern and decorative composition. Finally, a pencil study of a fruit bowl reveals her solid draughtsmanship and careful attention to tone and form.

Tiffany herself shared a lovely note on completing the course: “Thank you so much for your guidance over the past few years. I have really enjoyed the course and I was always happy to receive your feedback after every submission!”

It has been a pleasure to see Tiffany’s work develop over the course of her studies, and we wish her every happiness as she continues her artistic journey. Congratulations, Tiffany!
