It is easy to think that having lots of materials will make making art easier. In reality, too much choice can sometimes slow things down.
Working with fewer materials can be surprisingly helpful. When options are limited, your attention naturally shifts from deciding what to use to focusing on how you use it.
Using the same pencil, brush or small selection of colours allows you to become more familiar with them. Over time, this builds confidence and control. You learn what your materials can do without constantly starting from scratch.
Working simply can also reduce pressure. There is less to manage, less to prepare and fewer decisions to make before you begin.
Limiting materials is not about restriction. It is about creating conditions that make it easier to work with focus and intention.
If you would like a simple theme to explore this week, our Weekend Art Challenges, posted here on the blog every Friday, offer prompts that work beautifully with a limited set of materials.
Sometimes less really does give you more.
