Summer light has a particular quality that can be very inspiring for artists. Longer days, brighter highlights and stronger shadows all offer plenty to observe, even in familiar places.
You do not need to travel anywhere special to notice this. Light through a window, shadows on a wall, or sunlight falling across everyday objects can all become subjects in their own right.
Instead of thinking about what to draw, try paying attention to how light behaves. Where are the brightest areas? Where does the light fade into shadow? How do colours change in different conditions?
Focusing on light rather than subject can make drawing feel fresher and more engaging. It also helps develop observation skills without adding pressure.
If you would like a theme to explore this gently, our Weekend Art Challenges, posted on the blog every Friday, offer a relaxed way to put this kind of noticing into practice.
