Monday Art Musings – Making Art When Motivation Is Low

There will always be days when you want to make art, but the motivation just is not there. You may feel tired, distracted, or simply not in the right frame of mind. This is completely normal and happens to every artist.

The problem often comes when we believe that motivation must come first. We wait until we feel inspired before we start, and when that feeling does not arrive, nothing happens.

In practice, motivation usually follows action, not the other way around.

One of the most helpful things you can do on low-motivation days is to lower the bar. Instead of planning a finished piece, aim for something small. A quick sketch, a few studies, or even ten minutes with your materials is enough.

You do not need to enjoy every session. Not every piece has to be meaningful or successful. Showing up in a small way still counts, and it often leads to more than you expect.

It can also help to remove pressure by changing what you do. Try working smaller, using a different medium, or focusing on something familiar rather than challenging. Comfort has its place, especially when energy is low.

Another useful shift is to stop thinking in terms of productivity. Making art is not about output. It is about keeping the habit alive. Even quiet, uninspired sessions are part of the process.

Motivation comes and goes. Habits are what carry you through the gaps.

And if you are looking for a gentle prompt to help you begin, our Weekend Art Challenges, posted every Friday on the blog, are designed to give you a starting point without pressure or expectation.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply begin, even if you do not feel ready.
