Monday Art Musings – Why It Is Okay to Work More Slowly

In a world that often values speed and productivity, it is easy to feel that you should be progressing faster with your artwork. Working slowly can sometimes feel like falling behind.

In reality, slow work is often thoughtful work.

Taking your time allows you to observe more carefully, make considered decisions and respond to what is actually happening on the page. Rushing can lead to frustration and overworking, while a slower pace often leads to stronger results.

Everyone works at a different speed, and that speed can change depending on the subject, medium or even the time of year. There is no correct pace for making art.

Working slowly also gives you space to enjoy the process. When you stop measuring progress by speed, it becomes easier to focus on learning and discovery instead.

If your work feels slow at the moment, try not to judge it too harshly. Slower periods are often when important skills are quietly developing.
